About the Solid Waste Module

In this Web-based module you work with American and Russian students and teachers to find out how to solve a problem that faces all societies on the Earth---the problem of"too much solid waste." In the module, you will get your hands dirty by separating garbage, build a compost pile and study the effects over a long period of time, and find out about recycling. You will also use the tools of the Internet to communicate with your peers in America and Russia to discuss your ideas about resolving problems associated with solid waste management.

Schedule of Activities

Activity

Web Reminders

Activity 1. Introduce the module to the students. Show them the schedule and the goal of completing the module. Then, do the first part of the activity in which students separate a large bag of trash that you have collected.

Activity 1 (continued). Contine the lesson by having teams of students constructing their own landfill in plastic bottles. The "landfills" should be kept in a dark place, but they need to be accessable to the students so they can observe them over the next month.

Post results of the analysis of the trash on the Eco-Connections Project Forum

Post results of the analysis of the questions in the Explanation and Taking Action parts of the lesson.

Lesson 2. In this lesson students will build a composting pile and observe changes in it over a long period of time.

Write a summary of the project and post the results on the Eco-Connections Project Forumto be shared with Russian/American counterparts.

Lesson 3. This lesson will take three days. On day one students begin the process of recycling paper. On day 3 they will observe the results.

Post your findings and/or your opinions about recycling on the Eco-Connections Project Forum.

Lesson 4. In this lesson students will need time to access web sites to answer key questions about household hazardous waste. They will also need to assess the safety of their homes by Taking a list of hazardous waste items home and check off any of the items that you find on the list.

Post a summary of your findings and/or opinions about household hazardous waste on the Eco-Connections Project Forum.
